Fort Attack

In traditional chess, the goal is to find a way to checkmate the opposing king. Real battles, however, are much more versatile. One scenario, for example, is an army laying siege to another army’s fortress. Often, the battle is considered decided when a unit manages to breach the enemy’s fortifications.

Inspired by this, we developed a chess variant where the objective is to infiltrate the opponent’s fort. In the missions in the “Fort Attack” category, the goal is to place one of your pieces in the enemy’s fort. This means moving a piece onto one of the fort squares marked on the board. If you succeed, you win the game.

The flip side is that your opponent also wins if they manage to place a piece on one of your fort squares. So when attacking, always make sure no enemy piece gets too close to your fort.

A screenshot of the ChessMissions app. It shows a "Fort attack" mission, which resembles the traditional chess setup. However, there are "Fort fields" on the baseline.
Example: Mission 7. Can you sneak past your opponent to land on one of their fort squares?

Of course, you can also win the game by capturing all of your opponent’s pieces. But the real thrill comes from devising a strategy to sneak past their pieces and reach the fort. What would your tactic be for this?
